“In the search for the truth we should experiment whenever possible.”

What does ‘truth” in photography mean in this time of digital disruption, fake news and the reassessment of representation and authorship? Many of Magnum’s current generation of photographers are expanding their methods of telling stories to address the multifarious challenges to the photographic image. For Alex Majoli, the evolution from his photojournalistic origins has led to an eight-year long exploration of the theatricality of life.

Opera Aperta represents the most radical chapter yet in this investigation. Commissioned by the Fondazione I Teatri in Reggio Emilia, it incorporates multiple ideas about performance and the pandemic in a purposefully open and unresolved narrative.

Magnum’s relationship with documenting the world’s crises is rooted in the work and interests of its founding photographers, who had witnessed the atrocities of World War II and were united in their humanist approach to documenting the world around them. Since then, Magnum photographers have continued to document those in need, often working closely with the charitable agencies supporting them. A recent Professional Practice event hosted by Magnum London highlighted the changing role of photography and storytelling in advocacy and fundraising work by non-government agencies, charities and aid organizations. The event aimed to share practical tips for emerging photographers on how to best work with NGOs and to discuss recent trends. Here, we present some key tips and considerations to best equip a photographer for working in this field, written by Magnum’s head of Education Shannon Ghannam, with input from Save The Children’s Managing Picture Editor Ivy Lahon and Tom Elkins, CEO of PhotoVoice.

Venerdì 12 Luglio 2019 si è concluso il processo aperto a carico di Vitaly Markiv per concorso nell’omicidio di Andy Rocchelli, colpito a morte il 24 maggio 2014 insieme ad Andrey Mironov, pure ucciso, e a William Roguelon gravemente ferito nell’attacco.
La presidente della corte, la giudice Annamaria Gatto, ha pronunciato la sentenza di condanna in concorso di colpa dell’imputato Vitaly Markiv e dello stato ucraino in quanto responsabile civile. La corte ha richiesto una pena di 24 anni di incarcerazione per l’imputato, che è inoltre interdetto in perpetuo dai pubblici uffici
